A Response to a Steven Weinberg Quote on Subjectivism

“With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil – that takes religion.”

― Steven Weinberg

Is an example of a beautiful collection of words with the most ludicrous of meanings. And most people would swallow stuff like this up without scrutiny.

If religion = belief in God and doing his will

And God’s will = objective morality/goodness

Therefore Goodness = religion or adherence to religious beliefs.

However if goodness = whatever each person or group thinks. (Subjectivism)

Evil = doing anything contrary to what one thinks.

So, evil would be anyone doing anything they don’t want to do.

But good cannot be defined using any objective terms and no other form of evil can be conceived apart from being unable to do whatever one likes.

And if you condemn anyone of doing any evil, you would be a hypocrite and worse a narcissist who thinks their personal moral compass is the ultimate. You as a subjectivist should allow people kill, molest kids and commit genocides because that is their own moral code. Or you can admit there is something objectively wrong with these, and by extension admit the possibility of a transcendent law guiding mankind.

I encountered this during research, someone posted it online, and that was my response. The original quote may have been taken out of context, it is possible. However, the context it was used is what I am responding to. I am not familiar with the original author and mean no disrespect.
